Orkut Album Gets A New Look

Finally Orkut gave a new look to it's album page. And yup, present orkut album it looks great. In stead of a row design, they designed it in a column manner. Previously our orkut albums were getting arranged by the date of creation. But this time your album will get updated automatically according to your recent updates. Which means, now people don't have to shuffle through your albums to view your last added pics, your last updated will show up first. Great, isn't that? Just have a look on it's screenshot below:

 

And they have added more option also so that you can access the album with one touch.

Also co-authors will get full author status soon, means their posts won’t be moderated. You can this is kind of promotion!

Brazilians created first Orkut Community, Stanford University!

Orkut.com was created by a guy who work at Google and also is called Orkut, everybody knows. But do you know that the first community created in the Orkut network, for example, was simply overrun by Brazilians who only want the taste of being there, even without having anything to do with this communication.

In time, the first orkut community was created by none other than Orkut! As the Stanford University was important center of the relationships of the engineer, he tested the system for communities with "Stanford University."The community occupies the ID 0000001, perhaps because it has been founded by thousands of curious Brazilians.

"This community is dedicated to the students, faculty, and alumni of Stanford University. The place is to reunite and place notices for upcoming events," says the text description of the "Number One Community". But, unlike to be "dedicated to students, faculty and students from Stanford University, a place for meeting and dissemination of news of events", the community turned into a place for old Brazilian mess. Currently, for example, in a good torn and Portuguese, who became the most spoken language in Orkut, the Community has 0000001 as main poll: "Have you ever been to the beach?"

Other issues that have been created in the community originally conceived for the American university are: "What is the best kind of bread?", "What is emo?", "You will choose the first option?".

Add AOL,Hotmail and Yahoo Friends in ORKUT

You wished you could add your friends having other then Gmail account in your orkut friends list ....Then your wish has been granted !!!
Now Google’s social networking site Orkut has added a new feature, that lets you to “find friends from non-Gmail account". You can find friends from your address books on Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL.
How to do that?
1) Login to your Orkut account.
2) Just choose the email provider (Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail or AOL), from the drop down which is on the left- hand side bottom corner of Orkut home page as shown below.

 

3) Enter the user name and password for your email account, which you have selected as the email provider in the step 1.
4) Orkut will then show you the contacts from your address book.
5) It will also show who are already on orkut.
6) The best part is that you can invite friends in bulk. Now that's a great feature in itself , what do say ?
If your email provider is not on the list, don’t feel left out, Google is working on adding more.
Note : The email provider list is not country specific, so find your friends no matter where you are, or where they are. For example, if you have a hotmail.com.in or yahoo.co.in email address, simply select “hotmail” or "yahoo" from the drop down. Remember, orkut values your privacy and security and will never store your password nor transmit it over non-secure channels.

How To Lock Selected Orkut Albums

Few days back orkut added a new feature which is one of its kind to privacy of albums. So from now you can manage the albums you want to share with everyone in your network or with all of your friends only. This can be done in two ways as follows :

# First way :-
1) Login to your orkut account.
2) Then click the Photo link which is under your account name.

3) Click the Edit button of the album you want to edit as shown in the snip shots.

4) Choose your option to whom you want to share the album.

5) Then click update button.

# Second way :-
1) Login to your orkut account.
2) Then click the settings link which is on your left hand side screen ( Show in the Snap Shots)

3) Click on the privacy tab.

4) Now in allow content to be accessed by: you can restrict who you want to allow to access your content which can view scrapbook, write in scrapbook, videos, testimonials, feeds and albums.
5) When you select albums as choose individually then you will have a new drop box below it.
6) In the new drop box you can select the choice of options for all the albums individually.

7) After all the changes just click the save changes button under it.

Google clarification on Orkut maintenance

Last week, Orkut was unreachable for a few hours. We got engaged in contacting with personnel from Google, which simply replied "orkut is through a non-periodic maintenance. That is not liable for maintaining the integrity and safety profiles active. Nor is it possible new entries temporarily. "

In the case muffled by the service returns to normal, some readers came into contact by instability are still in their profiles on Orkut. The official response to these problems, and the instability of the beginning of the week came through a notice in the official Orkut blog:

"On Monday, July 21, 2008, at approximately 18:30 GMT, the orkut.com entered into maintenance. 1. Privacy
This is priceless. Anyone can check your profile, Friends list etc on orkut. That is not the case here. By default only your friends can see your profile. The others can only see your name and thumbnail (reduced version of the profile picture). Nothing more. In addition, you can always configure the options for privacy as deemed appropriate.

2. Networking restricted
If you want to be part of the network of your company or faculty, you will have to prove that you are a part of it. Otherwise forget that! For example, if you're employee of the company XYZ, you will have to provide their corporate email (ex: orkut-guide@xyz.com) and a confirmation message will be sent to this email. That is, only those who have emails with the domain name XYZ can be part of that network. While on Orkut, you can hit a JOIN COMMUNITY button and that will do the job. If the community is in a moderated state, a moderator has to approve your joining request. But just imagine, how would a moderator check your genuiness of being a employee if that company is wided to 5/6 counties! So, a simple e-mail confirmation will do the job and hence Facebook leave Orkut far behind in this case.

3. Design
In Facebook everything is clean. The site is virtually all done in shades of blue, black and white, making the navigation less tiring. You can customize the look of your profile, adding / removing fields and changing its position.




4. Upload EE organization of photos
Users of Orkut correct me if I'm wrong, the Orkut album system is very primitive. You have to upload the photos manually, one by one, and in any order you want. If you need to change the position of any photo you must delete all pics uploaded after that and re-uploading one by one in the right order. Enough to be ridiculous.

In case of Facebook photos can be transferred all at once. To change the position of the photos just a simple movement of mouse: drag and drop. Furthermore there is no limit of photos (on Orkut are only 100*10=1000) and you can organize your photos into albums. Need to talk more?

5. Tags in photos
The system of tags for photos of Facebook is quite interesting. You make a mark any part of a person's picture and then add the tag. Thus when someone passes the mouse on top of that person appears her name. A link to the tagged person's profile on Facebook is added to the tag automatically. You can also add tags for photos that are not yours. Of course, then the owner of the photo must approve its tag.

Now you will say me, even Orkut is having this feature. Yaa, yaa, I know that. But let me share a secret, Orkut copied this feature from Facebook. FaceBook is having this feature since a long, while Orkut released Photo Tag feature a couple of weeks ago. So, whom would you prefer? The originality or the copy cat?

6. Plugins
What makes Facebook are highly customizable is it's plugins or extensions. There are more than 1000 applications available. And more importantly, FaceBook plugins are developed by Facebook guys itself. In Orkut there are some 100+ plugins(they call it Orkut Applications) and all of them are developed by 3rd party. To be honest, most of them are just rubbish. Some 12/15 Orkut applications are popular while others are just crap.

7. Pokes
Poke can be translated as cutucar. You know when you have nothing to say but only wants to "disrupt" his friend? So this is more or less. He receives a notification and can also poke you back. Orkut recently launched this feature, but that looks unprofessional. If you have ever used iPoke on Orkut, you can understand what I am trying to say here.

8. Gifts
This is still a great way to show someone how important he/she is. These are virtual in Facebook. They are, actually, images of a gift that could be real:


Who knows who receives this has a cost, he knows that it is get anyone. The value of the gesture becomes much greater.

9. Marketplace
There is much to explain. It is a system type classifieds. You can add pictures to the articles that are selling, see the products of their friends and look into other networks. You can also make a list of things you want to buy. Articles range from golf balls to the apartments.

10. Feeds of activities
Any activity carried on Facebook is recorded. If you added a photo that was tagged, someone wrote on the Wall (like Orkut Scraps), someone has added a new friend, a status has changed, everything is stored in the form of feeds.

You can view a link called Mini-feed, in the profile homepage. Here all your activity feeds were stored. Like everything in Facebook, it can also be customized. For example, You can take your profile of the option to display the Mini-feed or delete only those activities that you do not want to appear.

11. Status
Just below, their identification is a field of status where you can post information such as: "I am back to home", "I am in India now". This filed is there to speak your voice.

Another thing I found interesting is if you have a relationship with someone (dating, engagement, marriage) and her husband also is part of Facebook, your relationship status can be: Fulano This is the boyfriend of Fulana of This, linked to the 2 profiles. And this is funny :p

12. History of friendships
You can relate details of their friendship. Where, how and when they first met, activities that have made together, and so on. That history must be approved by 2 friends and both can edit them.

Get New Orkut Scrap Alerts, Friend Info And More As ORKUT SMS On Your Mobile Device

Now you can receive alerts about new orkut scraps, New friendship requests and a lot more on your mobile device. No need to have a PC, a mobile handset can help you doing your regular practices on a go.

Recently Orkut launched a new feature and they call it Orkut Mobile. What makes it more interesting is that you need not to have a GPRS enabled handset to use this feature. Just a simple SMS will manage the job. You can check your scraps, get new scrap notifications, view friend's details including their e-mail Ids, send new scraps and a lots more features yet to be added by Orkut.

How to do the Orkut Mobile settings in order to get SMS alerts on mobile phone :

• Go to My Settings --> Mobile page.
• Orkut will show you the list of mobile carriers (Mobile Service Providers) from your country. Don't get shocked, you have already added your country in your profile.
• Now choose your mobile carrier (Mobile Operator).
• Then type your mobile no in the My Mobile Number field. That number will be used by Orkut to send you SMS (Short Service Messages) texts.
• After providing the number, Orkut will ask you to verify the number you just entered by sending a text message to Orkut from that number. Follow the instructions and send the message.
• After getting confirmation, Orkut will associate that mobile number with your profile and will add that number in it's database.
• In future you will get any friendship request or new scrap alerts on that mobile number. Simultaneously you can send scraps to your friends using that mobile number.
  
• All the scraps sent from your mobile number will be posted in your friend's scrapbook under your Orkut profile. Isn't that cool now?
• But remember one thing, this service is not free. Your Mobile service Provider may charge you for receiving and sending text messages.
  

NOTE : All of us know that our mobile operators charge us for sending SMS texts from our mobile, but why should we get charged for any incoming SMS messages that Orkut will send us? Note that Orkut Mobile is a premium service. Currently it's not working with all the mobile service providers. It has been associated with the leading ones only. And the incoming messages that will cost you, will be divided by Orkut and your SMS carrier. So, Orkut is planning to pocket some money by introducing this Orkut mobile feature.

Currently this service is available in Brazil and India. Because more than 50% of Orkut users belong to these two countries. After getting successful experience from these countries, Orkut will expand this feature for the worldwide users.

Orkut Mobile : How much would this cost me?

• If you belong to India, you can use this Orkut Mobile feature only with these mobile operators : BPL, MTNL, Aircel, Reliance, Spice and TATA. Other networks are not currently supported.
• For sending text messages, you will be charged Rs.2 per SMS from these operators, except MTNL, which will charge you RS.1 per message.
• Getting notifications from Orkut will be free until you reach your monthly quota. After that limit, you will get charged for incoming messages also.
• In Brazil, Orkut users with the following operators can enjoy this service : Amazonia Celular, Brasil Telecom, Claro, Oi, Temelig celular/Vivo, TIM, Vivo.

SMS Commands you have to use for Orkut Mobile :

• on or off - Turns ON or OFF SMS alerts
  
• reset - Resets your monthly quota limit. Let me explain how it works... suppose you have a limit of getting 50 free alerts on your mobile phone. And if you just reached that limit by 10th of that month, you won't get any new alerts in that month. But if you want to keep that SMS notification activated, you can send a text message, by typing the word reset, and Orkut will add some extra quote to your account for that month. Keep this in mind that the extra quota will be chargeable and that will cost you Rs.2 per incoming message if you are in India.
• unregister - Gets yourself unregistered from Orkut Mobile service and you won't get any future notifications from Orkut.
• scrap - In the field, type your Orkut friend's name and your message in the field, then send the SMS. Orkut will automatically post that scrap in your friend's scrapbook under your profile name.
• contact > - This will enable you to view the contact information (phone number, email, IM, and address) of an orkut friend.

Limitations:

• Scraps/emails sent to you via sms are 5-6 hours late.

• This Hack wont work if your scrapbook is locked or Blog set as private.
• This whole trick/process is for Indian cell users only.
• If You are using email services which don’t provide ( hotmail/live mail, zapak, rediff, indiatimes ) mail forwarding options ; you can’t read them in your mobile.
• The emails that you are auto forwarding to blogger.com must be less than 10 MB in size.

Now add tag of your friends in Orkut

Orkut added a new system called TAG. It's been a while since Orkut implemented this feature. This is a all cool system to get your friends noticed as well as yourself.

Well, tagging feature is not new to online world. This feature has been used by several other famous site like blogspot.com, wordpress.com, technorati.com, del.icio.us, diggit.com and the list goes on. Before few months, another social network and the biggest competitor of orkut, Facebook started this tagging feature. And surprisingly it became very popular. So, may be the popularity encouraged Orkut to go ahead and add this feature.

There is no trick involved to play with this tagging feature. All you need to do is click on the 'ADD TAG' option available under the album pics. Then select a portion of that photo using your mouse. After selecting that portion, a propmt will ask you to name that part from your friend's list. If you have choosen a friend's pic, just select his name from the friend's list. And from now on, anyone who brings his cursor near the portion you selected, your friend's name will pop up and upon clicking, he will be taken to your friend's profile page. Orkut Youtube Video Bug : Users are not being able to edit their Orkut Video Title

Recently I found a bug in adding a title to Orkut Video. And trust me, that's the most irritating one. The whole drama goes like this :

I uploaded few of my personal videos onto Youtube, the largest video sharing network. As I had to upload seven videos at once and also that was late in night, I did not fill up the title and description part well. I just filled those parts with random key strokes, thought to edit them later in my spare time. And when all those videos got uploaded, I added them all in my Orkut Videos section by adding links to those videos.

After few days, when I went to my orkut profile to edit those titles, I was surprised to see that those titles are not changing. Allas! In fact you can edit your title at first, as Orkut uses AJAX feature to edit them. But once you reload your page, you will see your old title there. Though description is getting edited, title remains same. I even tried this on different browsers like Firefox, IE7, Opera, Safari, but same result! And thats the sad part.

I am not sure wheather this is a bug or this is a default feature in order to stop spamming, but I am planning to re-upload those videos with the appropiate title this time and then will post them on Orkut. I made this post just to let you guys know about this, so that you don't have to reupload your videos again just because you did not put the titles correctly in a hurry. Read more on this article...

Orkut Buyukkokten, the creator of Orkut is a gay

Orkut Buyukkokten, creator of Orkut married to his boy friend Derek Holbrook in june, this year. This is very surprising that the founder of the largest social network is a gay. Just check out the below picture:

California Supreme Court made gay marriages legal, so it became very easy for Derek and Orkut to get married. The lady in the picture above is Marissa Mayer, the Vice President of Search Product and User Experience at Google.

Now You can upload 1000 Pictures in your Orkut Profile album

On 12th of Feb this year Orkut announced another good news for its users. Earlier the maximum image uploading capacity to any or orkut profile album was limited to 12 but now they increased it to a whooping THOUSAND (1000 Images) maximum. Last but not the least to make upload process faster and user friendly orkut also developed a plugin for Internet Explorer users to upload multiple images to their album at once, as simple as copy paste :)

Now get ready with your camera to take snaps and share with your friends through Orkut.

Orkut still vulnerable to the scrapbook XSS bug

www.Orkut.com, the social networking site from Google, one of the biggest e-business company, still very much exposed to the XSS bug. Even though on orkut's official blog the orkut team says that they have fixed the bug and the new features of the orkut scrapbook cannot be exploited anymore, but the problem is still there and seems to be at large. As per the orkut team "..We believe that this action has been effectively stopped" but here below I am sharing a small script that does the trick on your orkut scrapbook.

If someone copies the below script and sends you a scrap in your scrapbook, you automatically are logged out of orkut. And even if you try login again and go to your scrapbook, you are logged out again. I would suggest not trying this with your friends, because if you do so.. they might not know how to delete your scrap and could never come out of this problem.
